A useful carbon baseline starts with better questions.

Before the calculations, take a step back. The decisions your inventory needs to support should shape the work from the beginning.

A perspective from Baobab Advisory Services

Start with the decision

A carbon inventory can help a business understand its footprint, respond to a customer request or identify where to reduce emissions. Those objectives overlap, but they do not always require the same level of detail. Agree who will use the results and which decisions they need to make before asking your team to collect information.

Make the boundary explicit

Write down the activities, entities and reporting period you are considering. Discuss how the business operates, where responsibility sits and which parts of the value chain need attention. Keep a record of the choices you make. A clear boundary makes the result easier to explain and gives the next inventory a useful starting point.

Understand what you have

Review the evidence already available: energy records, purchasing information, transport activity and supplier responses. Identify what each source covers and where it has limitations. An early review can save weeks of collecting information that is too aggregated, covers the wrong period or cannot support the intended calculation.

Make uncertainty useful

Some estimates will be necessary. Document the assumptions, distinguish stronger evidence from weaker estimates and explain what would improve confidence. A list of limitations is more useful when it is paired with priorities: which gaps could affect a decision, and which can reasonably wait until the next reporting cycle?

Leave a repeatable process

The most useful baseline includes more than a total. Keep the source records, calculation methods and ownership clear enough for the next person to follow. Finish with a manageable improvement plan so the next cycle builds on the first, rather than starting again.
